Anyone who frequents folk clubs in Latin America is familiar with this sing-along standard. The chorus of this song is guaranteed to get your audience singing.

"El Rey" was composed by José Alfredo Jiménez, who had no musical training. He did not play an instrument and did not even know the Spanish terms for "waltz" and "key. " Nonetheless, he composed more than 1000 songs that have been recorded by dozens of well-known artists as diverse as Rocio Dúrcal, Vicki Carr, and Maná.

This version is performed by Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández. Nicknamed as "El Potrillo" (The Colt) by the media and his fans, he has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Alejandro is the son of the ranchera singer Vicente Fernández. He originally specialized in traditional, earthy forms of Mexican folk music, such as mariachi and ranchera. He has branched out with great success to pop music.
