Music of the Andes

Inti-Illimani was formed in 1967 by a group of Chilean university students.

The group became popular in Chile for their song "Venceremos" (We shall win!) which became the anthem of the Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende. During the 1973 Chilean coup, they were on tour in Europe and unable to return to Chile, where their music was forbidden by the ruling military junta.

"Alturas" is an instrumental piece that features the charango, an Andean instrument traditionally made from the shell of an armadillo. It also features sampoņos--South American pan pipes.

Inti-Illimani originally released "Alturas" in 1973.
