Conguero Poncho Sanchez leads the band playing Cal Tjader's "I Showed Them" at Montreaux.

Born in Texas, Sanchez is considered one of the top American percussionists.

"Conguero" means congo player in Spanish.

Sanchez started out as a guitar player and singer and played in an R & B group called "The Halos."

The California neighborhood where he grew up was a mix of musical styles: Afro-Cuban music (mambo, son, cha-cha, rumba, guaracha, salsa) by greats such as Tito Puente, and bebop jazz, including the works of Charlie Parker.
